The Life and Legacy of Guru Arjan Dev Ji

Guru Arjan Dev was born in 1563. He was chosen to succeed his father, Guru Ram Das, as the fifth Sikh Guru. Guru Arjan Dev made many significant contributions, making him a pivotal figure in the history of Sikhism. These included the following:

Guru Ji’s Birth

Guru Arjan Dev was born in 1563 in Goindwal, a small town in

Sikh faith. He was the son of Guru Ram Das who was a well-known spiritual
leader. Compassion and wisdom were characteristic features associated with the Guru
Ram Das. His tenure saw a revolution as it led to a substantial increase in
growth and development within the Sikh community that made it more prosperous
than before. From an early age, he imbibed teachings from his father, and religious
practices that laid the groundwork for becoming the fifth guru on his
spiritual journey.

Childhood

Guru Arjan Dev grew up in a spiritual environment. He spent his childhood surrounded by Sikh teachings and practices from a young age. Guru Arjan Dev learned Gurmukhi, Hindi, Sanskrit, and Persian languages. He received spiritual training from his maternal grandfather, Guru Amar Das. From a very young age, Guruji had a strong devotion to Sikhism and his learning was fueled by his curiosity and willingness to learn more.

He was a very skilled individual and had skills ranging from musical proficiency and horse riding skills to spear-throwing abilities. Guru Arjan Dev served others in a humble manner by distributing Langar and cleaning utensils in Gurudwaras. Devotion towards his faith and a desire to help others characterised Guruji’s early years. Successor as Guru

After the death of Guru Ram Das in 1581, Guru Arjan Dev was chosen to succeed his father as the fifth Sikh guru. He was just 18 years old at the time. When this decision was made, some people questioned the ability of the 18-year-old to be able to lead. Guru Arjan Dev proved himself to be a wise and compassionate leader. His actions earned him the respect and admiration of his followers.

The Mughal Emperor Jahangir arrested Guru Arjan Dev. and accused him of helping his son Khusrau when he rebelled. The Emperor is everything in his might to torture Guru Arjan Dev badly. These atrocities were barbaric and included things like making Guruji sit on hot metal and hot sand being poured on his body. Even after such tortures, Guru Arjan Dev stayed strong and did not leave his faith. In 1606, the Emperor killed Guru Arjan Dev.

Contribution to Sikhism

Guru Arjan Dev made significant contributions to Sikhism, including the compilation of the Adi Granth, the holy scripture of Sikhism. He also established the city of Amritsar as the spiritual centre of Sikhism and built the Golden Temple, which became a symbol of Sikh faith and unity.
